Utility of horizontal and vertical sections of scalp biopsies in various forms of primary alopecias

Abstract: BACKGROUND:This study was performed to demonstrate the usefulness of horizontal and vertical sections of scalp biopsies in diagnosing various forms of primary alopecias and to highlight the importance of error-free grossing.MATERIALS AND METHODS:A retrospective analytical review of 228 scalp biopsies was done, noting down the diagnostic histopathological features evident in horizontal and vertical sections of each cases. The idealness of the sections, especially horizontal section, was also analyzed.RESULTS:Ou… Show more

“…Of note, HHS are routinely used to enhance the diagnosis of various types of alopecias, allowing prompt follicular counts, density, and ratio. 11 In conclusion, this novel comparative approach may contribute to a more precise definition of RCM findings and could represent the drive for further research as well as an innovative tool for educational purposes.…”

“…The interpretation of such results, however has been always based on the comparison with vertical conventional histopathological sections that, as known, do not reflect the same plane of RCM images. On the other hand, the use of horizontal histopathological sections (HHS) is common in the evaluation of various types of alopecias, allowing prompt follicular counts, density and ratio …”

“…In dermatology, the majority of skin specimens from biopsy or surgical procedures is analyzed using classical vertical histopathological sections, which represents the diagnostic gold standard. Horizontal histopathology is currently used for the diagnosis of some types of alopecia allowing a more correct visualization of follicular and perifollicular features ( 44 ).…”
