Utility of 4‐Chloro‐7‐Nitrobenzofurazan for the Spectrofluorimetric Determination of Butylated Hydroxyanisole and Propyl Gallate in Foodstuffs

Abstract: In this spectrofluorimetric method, NBD-Cl as a derivation agent is used to detect synthetic phenolic antioxidants. The method specificity has been greatly improved; there was no interference from other commonly used phenolic substances.

“…BHT and BHA were also determined simultaneously by spectrophotometry in pharmaceutical preparations and chewing gums 44 . Spectrofluorimetric determination of Butylated hydroxyanisole and propyl gallate in foodstuffs was reported by derivatization with 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD-Cl) 45 . BHA was detected in foodstuffs by measuring the emission intensity at 323 nm upon excitation with a wavelength of 293 nm 46 .…”

“…The currently employed methods for TBHQ or BHA detection primarily include high-performance liquid chromatography, 10 gas chromatography, 11,12 capillary electrophoresis, 13 fluorescence detection, 14,15 and electrochemistry. [16][17][18][19] In particular, electroanalytical methods are widely adopted in trace and ultra-trace analyses owing to their rapidity, sensitivity, and accuracy.…”
