Utility of 111In-labelled leucocyte scintigraphy in patients with fever of unknown origin in an era of changing disease spectrum and investigational techniques

Abstract: Despite changes in disease spectrum and advances in investigational techniques, our results suggest that (111)In-leucocyte scintigraphy is still a useful technique in establishing the cause of FUO. A higher PPV of this test in post-operative situations makes it especially applicable in this category of patients. Equally, the higher NPV in patients with spontaneous FUO virtually excludes infection/inflammation. Finally, a higher pre-test probability based on the radiological tests seems to be important in the o… Show more

“…Today, the most useful alternative is represented by labelled leukocyte scintigraphy, which can be of help in detecting focal infections. However, conclusions on this topic are not univocal [23][24][25][26][27]. Furthermore, there are some diffi culties that limit the use of this examination: fi rstly, the need for an in vitro labelling process of the white blood cells with its associated risks (in particular blood contamination); secondly, the special equipment and qualifi ed staff required; thirdly, the time required to complete the exam [23].…”
