Effect of diets containing tuna head hydrolysates on the survival and growth of shrimp Penaeus vannamei

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of the supplementation of hydrolysates from tuna head on the survival and growth of Penaeus vannamei. To this end, a feeding trial was performed on eleven groups of shrimps of average weight 4.34 g. Every group was distributed into three tanks (30 shrimps per tank of 150 L) and was fed with one of the following eleven diets, all of them containing 40% crude protein: one diet containing tuna head meal as the principal protein source, which was used as control diet; nine diets formulated by replacing 50% tuna head meal by fish protein hydrolysates (FPH), and finally one commercial diet chosen as a reference. FPH were obtained by hydrolysis of tuna head during 2, 3 or 6 h and ulterior centrifugation in order to recover an aqueous fraction containing soluble protein and a solid sludge. 9 different diets were formulated according to the origin of the FPH: three diets DS2, DS3 and DS6 containing the soluble protein powders (dry extract from the aqueous fraction) recovered after 2, 3 and 6 h of hydrolysis, respectively; 3 diets supplemented with insoluble protein powers DI2, DI3, DI6 (obtained after drying the solid sludge) and 3 diets containing a mixture of both soluble and insoluble protein powers DM2, DM3, DM6. After 6 weeks of experiment, the survival, gain weight, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio were compared between the different groups. The present study showed that the diets supplemented with soluble protein powders (DS2, DS3 and DS6), as well as one containing insoluble protein powder (DI2) from the hydrolysis of tuna head improved significantly the four zootechnical parameters studied. On the contrary, the survival rates and growth performances for the groups fed with the diets containing a mixture of protein powders were not significantly different or even lower compared to the control and the commercial diets. It was concluded that fraction separation after hydrolysis had a positive effect on the zootechnical performance of the formulated diets. New carfish species for the development of j.vh culture in Africa.Besides Clarias gariepinus introduced in aquaculture in thc early 1970s, other African catfishes (Siluroidei) have been studied for their potential in aquaculture for about 15 years. These belong to the genus Chrysichthys (Claroteidae) and Heterobranchus (Clariidae) invcstigated in Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Benin, and mainly in the context of a brackish water aquaculture in lagoon or estuaries. It is in the Ivory Coast in the early eighties that reproduction in captivity of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, and then of Heterohranchus longijilis, was obtained for the first time as a result of research carried out within the Ivorian Oceanologic Research Center (CRO) in Abidjan. Nowadays, the breeding cycles of both species has been achieved and extension towards the production sector has been initiated. Production of C. nigrodigitatus is rnainly monospecific, intensive or semi-intensive, in lagoon enclosures (Ivory Coast) or in brackish-water ponds (Nigeria). In Ivory Coast, its culture became significant since 1990 with an annual production of 200-300 tons. The biology of H. Iongijilis is similar to that of C. gariepinus, but the former presents the advantage of a faster growth. The commercial production of this species is now beginning in lvory Coast. Intensive rearing of H. longijilis in lagoon enclosures appears as an appropriate option, but promising results have also been obtained in freshwater ponds. Based on the Ivorian experience, H. longijilis aquaculture development projects are currently camed out in Niger and Cameroon. The recent literature reports also culture trials with H. bidorsalis in Nigena. Intergeneric hybrids between H. longijilis or H. bidorsalis and C. gariepinus have been produced in South Africa, Ivory Coast and Nigena. However, the real advantage of using the hybrids instead of the parental species for aquaculture remains to be demonstrated. The results obtained so far show that the culture of C. nigrodigitatus and H. longijilis constitutes now a possibility of diversification, and even an alternative to the use of C. gariepinus, for African aquaculture. A synthesis of existing data on the biology and culture of these species is presented.

Biological silages were prepared from shrimp head and octopus viscera by-products recuperated from the Tunisian seafood industry. Physical and biochemical changes and microbiological profiles were determined for raw materials during fermentation and on end products. Results A c c e p t e d M a n u s c r i p t 2 showed that biological silage significantly affected (P<0.05) moisture, protein, and ash contents of shrimp head (CSHS) and octopus viscera silages (COVS). CSHS and COVS were stable, and their final pH values were 4.31 ± 0.01 and 3.71 ± 0.00, respectively. Proteolysis activity was confirmed by a significant increase (P<0.05) of soluble nitrogen and low molecular weight of protein (<260 Da) found on the end products for both silages. Lipid oxidation was delayed by addition of 150 ppm ethoxyquin to the raw material prior to fermentation. Biogenic amines detected in raw shrimp and octopus samples decreased significantly (P<0.05) during the silage process. Histamine and tyramine, detected at high levels on octopus viscera, were absent in the end products. Tyramine was produced in CSHS, indicating the possibility of the bacterial decarboxylation of tyrosine. Microbiological profiles showed that both silage products were free from pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. Therefore, biological silage can be used as a conservation procedure of shrimp and octopus by-products. The storage period could be shorter than 30 days, and further analysis should be carried out to ascertain safety and nutritional value of silage products.
