2004. Quantification of annual variations in fishing power due to vessel characteristics: an application to the bottom-trawlers of South-Brittany targeting anglerfish (Lophius budegassa and Lophius piscatorius). e ICES Journal of Marine Science, 61: 71e83.We present a method based on generalised linear models fitted to CPUE data to quantify the changes in fishing power in a fleet targeting a particular species. Changes in the fleet's fishing power are differentiated from variations in population abundance through the use of an abundance index estimated from the CPUE of an index vessel catching the species as by-catch. Observed inter-vessel differences in efficiency are then explained by vessel characteristics such as gear used, engine power, length of headline and ground rope, availability of GPS and skipper skills. The application of the method to the French bottomtrawlers targeting anglerfish in the Bay of Biscay and in the Celtic Sea during the period 1983e1998 reveals that fishing gear (twin or simple trawls) and engine power are the most important variables for explaining differences in fishing power.Nous présentons une méthode basée sur l'utilisation de modèles linéaires généralisés ajustés à des données de CPUE pour quantifier les changements de puissances de pêche dans une flottille ciblant une espèce particulière. Les changements de puissance de pêche sont distingués des variations d'abondance de la population en utilisant un indice d'abondance estimé à partir des CPUE d'un bateau témoin capturant cette espèce de manière accessoire. Les différences d'efficacité observées entre les bateaux sont ensuite expliquées par les caractéristiques techniques telles que l'engin utilisé, la puissance motrice, la longueur de la corde de dos, le bourrelet, la possession d'un GPS et l'expérience du capitaine. L'application de la méthode aux chalutiers de fond franc xais ciblant la baudroie dans le golfe de Gascogne et la mer Celtique sur la période 1983e1998 a montré que la puissance motrice et l'engin de pêche (chalut jumeau ou simple) étaient les facteurs qui expliquaient le plus les différences de puissance de pêche.

Recibido en diciembre de 2000; aceptado en junio de 2001 RESUMENSe analizaron los patrones espaciales de la fauna asociada con objetos flotantes en el Océano Pacífico oriental (OPO). Para ello, se calcularon diferentes índices de presencia para los grupos de especies capturados incidentalmente en lances de pesca de atún sobre objetos flotantes, utilizando la base de datos de los observadores de la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical (1993 a 1997). Los índices permitieron una primera agrupación de especies con respecto al porcentaje de presencia en los lances de pesca sobre objetos flotantes y al tipo de cardúmenes formados (especies solitarias o en cardúmenes). Posteriormente, de acuerdo con los grupos de especies, zona, periodo anual y tipo de objetos flotantes, se realizó una clasificación por medio del uso de diversos modelos de funciones discriminantes cuadráticas, basados en diferentes estructuras de varianzas y covarianzas. De ellos, se escogieron tres modelos para la clasificación de la fauna de acompañamiento, de acuerdo con las pruebas de razón de verosimilitud y con la reducción de la tasa de error observada. Los resultados muestran la existencia de dos zonas en el OPO, con diferente composición de grupos de especies y origen de los objetos flotantes. Las zonas tienen como frontera común la Contracorriente Ecuatorial localizada, aproximadamente, sobre los 4ºN. La zona norte presenta una fauna asociada con objetos flotantes dominada por adultos y reclutas del grupo de dos especies de tiburón, el sedoso (Carcharhinus falciformis) y el punta negra (C. limbatus); por reclutas de atún aleta amarilla (Thunnus albacares); y, en menor proporción, por el jurel (Seriola lalandi). En la zona sur, por su parte, dominan los reclutas de patudo (T. obesus). Las dos zonas comparten fauna que sólo se encuentra lejos de la costa, como es el caso del tiburón punta blanca (C. longimanus).Palabras clave: objetos flotantes, fauna asociada con objetos flotantes, Océano Pacífico oriental, pesca de atún, función discriminante cuadrática.

Time-area regulations have been introduced to manage stocks of tropical tuna, given the increased use of drifting fish aggregation devices (FADs). However, the consequences in terms of changes in fishing strategies and effort reallocation may not always be as expected. For instance, in the eastern Pacific Ocean, previous studies have highlighted that the increase use of FAD-fishing following the demand for tuna caught without dolphin mortality has raised concerns about the bycatch and the capture of juvenile tuna. In the tropical eastern Atlantic and western Indian Oceans, this study aimed to (1) assess, using before-after analysis, the consequences of previous time-area regulations on FAD sets on the fishing effort allocated to megafauna associated sets, and (2) evaluate through Monte Carlo simulations the potential effect of new regulations banning whale or/and whale shark associated sets. Firstly, we showed that previous time-area regulations, which were mainly implemented during seasons with few whale and whale shark associated sets, generally had thus little effect on the number of megafauna associated sets. Secondly, some simulations, particularly when both whale and whale shark associated sets were banned, predicted consequences of changes in fishing strategy. Indeed, these types of ban could lead to an increase in the number of FAD and free school sets but no change in the tuna catch, as well as a slight decrease in bycatch. These results indicate that an ecosystem approach to fisheries, by taking into account megafauna associated sets and bycatch, should thus be adopted when implementing management or conservation measures.
