Uteroplacental Doppler Flow Velocity Waveform Indices in Normal Pregnancy: A Statistical Exercise and the Development of Appropriate Reference Values

Abstract: In a prospective cross-sectional study, we examined 154 normal pregnant women and measured the systolic to diastolic (S/D) ratio and resistance index (RI) in the umbilical artery and both uterine arteries. Placental location with respect to laterality was determined by real-time ultrasound. In patients with unilateral placental location, each uterine artery was evaluated according to its relationship with the placenta. Doppler flow velocity waveforms were obtained by a continuous wave Doppler device. Kolmogoro… Show more

“…The inclusion criteria were the following: 1) estimated foetal weight <10 th percentile with normal umbilical artery Doppler (PI <95 th percentile for gestational age) for the study group [20]; 2) estimated foetal weight between the 10 th and 90 th percentiles for the control group. The estimated foetal weight was assessed using the table proposed by Hadlock et al [19].…”

“…Gestational age was determined from the date of the last menstrual period and was confirmed by a sonographic examination that was conducted no later than the 13th gestational week. The exclusion criteria were fetal structural malformations found on the sonographic examination and alterations in the Doppler examination of the umbilical arteries (pulsatility index >95th percentile for gestational age) 9 . Control pregnant women were selected within the same gestational interval who had fetuses with weight predictions between the 10th and 90th percentiles, according to the table proposed by Hadlock et al 8 …”
