Uterine evaluation and gestation diagnosis in owl monkey (Aotus azarai infulatus) using the B mode ultrasound

Abstract: The chemical (use of tranquilizers) and husbandry factors (capture stress) may be related to the prenatal death. The establishing methods of conditioning the female to the ultrasonographic exam may offer a solution to this problem.

“…The results related to ultrasound uterine evaluation in owl monkeys are very similar to those reported in another study performed with the species (Monteiro et al 2006). However, several methodological particularities differentiate the 2 experiments: 1) We conducted our study without chemical restraint, allowing a prolonged monitoring, with a higher number of repetitions in time, favoring the subjects' conditioning to the ultrasound exam.…”

“…According to the literature, the uterine volume of human females undergoes alterations with age, number of parturitions, and hormonal influence (Mauad-Filho et al 2001). We observed only the effect of the number of parturitions, demonstrating that the uterine volume for owl monkeys is proportional to the number of parturitions, the same as reported in other studies (Mauad-Filho et al 2001;Monteiro et al 2006).…”

“…The results related to uterine evaluation in this study are very similar to those reported in previous studies performed with ultrasound in A. azarai infulatus . The simplex non‐pregnant uterus was characterized by a globular fundic portion and a small cervix that protruded into the vaginal canal, which is similar to other New World primate species , but different from apes, which have the fundic portion described as flattened .…”
