Uterine artery embolisation for uterine fibroids using a 4F Rosch inferior mesenteric catheter

Abstract: High technical success rate for UAE is possible using a single 4F RIM catheter via a unilateral right CFA approach, which obviates the need for Waltman loop formation, reversed curve catheters and complex suture-catheter arrangements.

“…Our mean procedure time of 43.12 min compares well with those studies. However, our mean fluoroscopic time was 37.5 min, which is more compared with reported times of 25.3, 8 13.6 9 and 18.9 min 10 . We attribute this to the learning curve during this study, in carrying out catheterization of bilateral uterine arteries using unilateral femoral puncture.…”

“…1). The mean total procedure time as reported by other investigators has been 78.4 min for bilateral approach 8 and 44.2 9 and 61 min 10 for unilateral approach. Our mean procedure time of 43.12 min compares well with those studies.…”

“…Embolization was performed by the unilateral femoral artery approach with catheter and angiographic techniques, similar to uterine fibroid embolization as previously described by Ho and Cowan [11]. After insertion of a 4-French introducer sheath (Terumo Europe, Leuven, Belgium), the targeted internal iliac artery was catheterized using a 4-French Cobra catheter (Glide-cath, Terumo Europe, Leuven, Belgium).…”

“…The mean total procedure time as reported by other investigators has been 78.4 min for bilateral approach [16] and 44.29 [17] and 61 [18] min for unilateral approach. Fluoroscopic exposure time was 45 min, which is more compared with reported times of 25.3 [16], 13.69 [17] and 18.9 [18] min. In this study intermittent fluoroscopy was used to reduce the exposure.…”
