Usutu virus disease: a potential problem for North America?

Abstract: Usutu virus is an emerging mosquito-borne flavivirus initially identified in South Africa in 1959 that is now circulating throughout parts of Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. It is closely related to West Nile virus, and has similar vectors, amplifying bird hosts, and epidemiology. Usutu virus infection can occur in humans and may be asymptomatic or cause systemic (e.g., fever, rash, and hepatitis) or neuroinvasive (e.g., meningitis and encephalitis) disease. Given few reported cases, the full clinical spe… Show more

“…Usutu virus (USUV) is an emerging zoonotic virus that can cause neuroinvasive disease in humans [1]. As a member of the Flaviviridae family, Flavivirus genus, USUV is closely related to other pathogens of global human health concern, including West Nile virus (WNV), dengue virus (DENV), yellow fever virus (YFV), and Zika virus (ZIKV) [2].…”

“…The mosquito-borne Usutu virus (USUV) is an emerging zoonotic flavivirus (Simmonds et al, 2017) and within the family Flaviviridae it belongs to the Japanese encephalitis virus serogroup together with West Nile virus (WNV). USUV is currently circulating in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe (Gill et al, 2020). In multiple European countries its presence was already documented by various methods of detection of viral RNA and of anti-USUV antibodies (Vilibic-Cavlek et al, 2020).…”

“…Thus, the current circulation of USUV in a specific geographic area could serve as an indicator for WNV (Nikolay, 2015). Additionally, some of the virological features and clinical characteristics are similar between USUV and WNV suggesting the study of USUV as a reference for WNV (Nikolay, 2015;Gill et al, 2020). No vaccines or anti-viral treatment options are available so far for USUV disease (Gill et al, 2020).…”

“…Its synonymous virus, ITV, also re-emerged in Israel in the same time period (22). Likewise, in other areas of the world, similar patterns of flavivirus emergence are being observed, particularly involving those belonging to the JE and Ntaya groups (7,23,24). Also, the risk of emergence of any of those viruses in distant territories should not be disregarded, as some members of these groups have demonstrated their capacity to undergo transcontinental displacements.…”
