Accessibility User interface development method Model driven development User Interface Description LanguageIt is a legal requirement in many countries to ensure accessibility for Web applications. Although there are numerous regulations and standards regarding accessibility in the de-velopment of user interfaces, accessibility is nevertheless quite difficult to achieve, let alone to maintain at a high level of quality throughout the development process. This difficulty is due to diverse factors including, but not limited to, the lack of proper development meth-ods, authoring tools and accessibility training for user interface development professionals. In an attempt to offer a solution to these difficulties, this paper proposes a methodological approach for the integration of accessibility requirements into a user interface develop-ment method based on User Interface Description Language (UIDL) or, more specifically, on the USer Interface eXtensible Markup Language (UsiXML) framework. The proposed strat-egy involves the integration of accessibility requirements into design primitives of the user interface development method. This paper focuses on accessibility requirements related to navigation in the Task Model, Abstract User Interface Model and Transformation Model. The application of the approach shown for the SPA4USXML tool also includes a proof of concept and validation of the proposal. The study shows that accessibility requirements included at the design stage in the modelling of user interfaces can be systematized through mech-anisms such as new transformation rules and the use of support tools such as SPA4USXML.

Abstract. Awareness support in MDA technologies is virtually nonexistent. Furthermore, until recently there was no conceptual model suitable for representing Awareness support in model based architectures. Here, we introduce an extension of UsiXML user interface description language to support Awareness as an information requirement. UsiXML aims to describe multi-context and multimodal user interfaces. The model-based approach of UsiXML makes it a good candidate for integrating Awareness Support from the requirements phase to the final user interfaces. It enables Awareness requirements to be traced from the final user interfaces to the tasks and domain entities that generate them, allowing developers to maintain and validate all the Awareness mechanisms provided by the system. This leads not only to a better quality of system developed, but also an organized and traceable development of Awareness mechanisms, easier maintenance and improved user interaction.

In recent years HCI researchers have developed a broad range of new interfaces that diverge from the "window, icon, menu, pointing device" (WIMP) paradigm, employing a variety of novel interaction techniques and devices. Developers of these next generation user interfaces face challenges that are currently not addressed by state of the art user interface software tools. As part of the user interface software community's effort to address these challenges, the concept of a User Interface Description Language (UIDL), reemerge as a promising approach. To date, the UIDL research area has demonstrated extensive development, mainly targeting multi-platform and multi-modal user interfaces. However, many open questions remain regarding the usefulness and effectiveness of UIDLs in supporting the development of next generation interfaces. The aim of this workshop is to bring together both developers of next generation user interfaces and UIDL researchers in an effort to identify key challenges facing this community, to jointly develop new approaches aimed at solving these challenges and finally to consider future spaces for UIDL research.
