Using Wordle as a Supplementary Research Tool

Abstract: A word cloud is a special visualization of text in which the more frequently used words are effectively highlighted by occupying more prominence in the representation. We have used Wordle to produce word-cloud analyses of the spoken and written responses of informants in two research projects. The product demonstrates a fast and visually rich way to enable researchers to have some basic understanding of the data at hand. Word clouds can be a useful tool for preliminary analysis and for validation of previous f… Show more

“…Extra strategies for communicating research results in the local and regional public health context are therefore much needed. As such, we used the visual presentation of data communicates findings because it allows a basic understanding of the data at hand (14). A possible culturally rooted reluctance towards 'research language' may be overcome.…”

“…As research tools, word clouds do have certain limitations that we acknowledge. This is mainly that word frequency calculations, as opposed to considering the words within a context and meaning, are fundamental to the word cloud tool and it can be argued that it is more effective to consider the full text of each participant's interview (DePaolo and Wilkinson 2014;McNaught and Lam 2010).…”

“…For the open-ended question of the perceived top three most important monitoring tools, word clouds were generated online (TagCrowd, USA, 2019) based on responses for each rating, with larger and darker words signalling greater frequency of mentions. Word clouds are a visual qualitative method that allows the reader to understand main themes quickly, 18 with their use encouraged in sport and exercise research. 19…”
