Using Visual Design Experts in Critique-Based Evaluation of 2D Vector Visualization Methods

Abstract: Abstract-We describe an experiment in which art and illustration experts evaluated six 2D vector visualization methods. We found that these expert critiques mirrored previously recorded experimental results; these findings support that using artists, visual designers and illustrators to critique scientific visualizations can be faster and more productive than quantitative user studies. Our participants successfully evaluated how well the given methods would let users complete a given set of tasks. Our results … Show more

“…In addition, Tory and Möller [66] argue that domain expert feedback can be a viable complement to controlled studies, both for heuristic evaluation of usability as well as for understanding the support of high-level cognitive tasks. However, not only the judgment of domain experts but also that of visual experts such as artists, graphic designers, or illustrators can be useful as has been shown in a few cases [1,27,29,30]-in particular since 'critique' as a technique originated from teaching in the visual arts [35]. In visualization, it can be used in combination with techniques such as sketching and ideation when developing new visualization techniques [26].…”

“…Derived data like λ 2 (the second eigenvalue of the pressure gradient) [11] may be visualized to help find features of interest like swirl. Some workers discuss visualization needs with artists (i.e., expert visual communicators) who then help design an effective visualization [3]. Our work is related in that we aim to evaluate previously developed visualization methods.…”

“…This work builds upon recent research that seeks to understand how best to integrate visual artists into designing and evaluating sophisticated data visualizations [19, 1, 21, 14]; researchers and practitioners working in any area of data visualization can adapt our collaborative design process.…”
