Using variance analysis of multitemporal MODIS images for rice field mapping in Bali Province, Indonesia

Abstract: Existing methods for rice field classification have some limitations due to the large variety of land covers attributed to rice fields. This study used temporal variance analysis of daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite images to discriminate rice fields from other land uses. The classification result was then compared with the reference data. Regression analysis showed that regency and district comparisons produced coefficients of determination (R 2 ) of 0.97490 and 0.92298, wh… Show more

“…In most of the abovementioned studies (see Table 1 [4,[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]), the spatial resolution of the input images (i.e., MODIS, AVHRR, and SPOT-VGT) were having relatively low (i.e., in the range 500 m to 1.1 km) [4,[13][14][15][16][17][18]. This particular issue would be critical as the dimension of some rice fields might be smaller than those of the employed spatial resolution.…”

“…However, using the spectral characteristics (or vegetation indices) determined by the key phenologies of a specific crop species, i.e., multi-temporal remote sensing imageries, is a promising way to improve the classification accuracy [62,63]. To effectively discriminate the rice field in eastern plain region of China, where the rice field is generally fragmented and irregular due to the topography and widely distributed water bodies and road networks, a specifically designed stepwise remote sensing classification strategy was applied in this study.…”

“…The forest land use type is also dominated by perennial plants and mangroves. Nuarsa et al [66] showed that annual, perennial and mangrove plants in the tropics have relatively stable vegetation indices throughout the year and are unaffected by the monsoon seasons. The agriculture land use type exhibits a seasonal pattern that is influenced by monsoons due to the planting period in which the dominant plant are paddy crops [67].…”
