Background To evaluate the willingness of US females of childbearing age, including high-risk groups, to participate in a CMV vaccine trial. Methods Two surveys, involving 238 and 680 females aged 18–49, assessed the impact of information sheets on willingness to participate in a CMV vaccine trial. The original survey studied the influence of information based on a CMV informed consent form. Following the finding that this Fact Sheet reduced willingness to enroll, an amended survey assessed the impact of different types of information on willingness to enroll. Results The first Fact Sheet decreased participation likelihood in both surveys (p = 0.055; p = 0.0139), while two more concise Fact Sheets significantly increased willingness to participate (p < 0.001 for both). Overall, 93% of respondents were generally aware of clinical research, but only 35% familiar with CMV. CMV awareness was highest in those currently or recently pregnant (overall, p < 0.001) and was moderately correlated to the willingness of enrollment in a CMV trial (rho = 0.3392, 2-sided p < 0.001). Greater percentages of participants who were initially marginally hesitant to enroll indicated they would be quite or very likely to participate after reading the concise Fact Sheets than those with greater baseline hesitancy. The willingness to participate in a CMV trial among Black/African Americans and those living with younger children did not increase after being informed of their specific higher risk from CMV. Conclusions Concise, relevant disease and risk information, informs willingness to enroll in CMV vaccine trials. However, dilution with information that does not resonate with readers may discourage those with the most to gain from clinical research participation.

Background Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the most common congenital infection worldwide and one of the leading causes of congenital hearing loss in newborns. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence rate for cytomegalovirus in pregnant women and the rate of CMV serological testing utilised during pregnancy in a rural region in Germany. Methods Retrospective data on the prevalence of CMV IgG and IgM antibodies were obtained from 3,800 women, identified in the study group of 19,511 pregnant women from outpatient settings whose samples were collected between 1 and 2014 and 30 April 2018. In addition, the serological CMV status in regards to various billing methods was further analyzed. Results Serological CMV tests were performed in 3,800 (19.5%) out of 19,511 pregnant women. 2,081 (54.8%) of these women were CMV seronegative. Among those, seroconversion rate of 0.37–1.42% was identified. A proportion of 2,710 (14.7%) of all 18,460 women with statutory health insurance made use of the CMV testing as an individual health service. Conclusions The low uptake of CMV serological testing in the study population covered indicates low risk awareness among pregnant women and their healthcare professionals. Presented seronegativity rates and routine seroconversion rate, demonstrate importance to improve intervention strategy to prevent feto-maternal CMV transmission.

Objectives To understand caregiver knowledge of and attitudes toward congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) testing in Utah. Study design We surveyed 365 caregivers whose children were being seen in an otolaryngology clinic at a tertiary pediatric hospital about their knowledge of and attitudes toward cCMV and cCMV screening. Descriptive statistics and cluster analysis were used to examine their responses. Results The majority of caregivers were unsure how cCMV was spread, the symptoms of cCMV, and why cCMV screening of infants was important. Most caregivers did not know that cCMV screening was required by law in Utah if an infant is referred after newborn hearing screening. A majority wanted to know if their child had cCMV even if asymptomatic and were willing to pay $20 for cCMV screening. Caregivers of children who had been tested for cCMV were significantly more likely to be strongly in favor of cCMV screening than expected by chance. Caregivers in the highly knowledgeable cluster were more likely to be strongly in favor of cCMV screening. Conclusions Caregivers frequently were unaware of cCMV and its implications. Attitudes toward cCMV screening generally were positive. Education on epidemiology and impact of cCMV may benefit both prevention of infection and attitudes toward screening.
