Using the ventrogluteal site for intramuscular injection

Abstract: The administration of intramuscular injections is a common nursing intervention in clinical practice. This article aims to raise awareness of the use of the ventrogluteal site for administering intramuscular injections. It describes the main reasons for using this site and outlines the complications associated with the dorsogluteal site. It is hoped that this review of the literature will shift everyday practice in favour of the ventrogluteal site.

“…Despite the fact that the ventrogluteal area is identified in the literature as the safest place for intramuscular injection, studies have shown that the vast majority of nurses do not use this area, and show reluctance to change, and although they are aware of the possibility of complications associated with the use of the dorsogluteal area they nevertheless continue to use it [5,9,14] . For this reason, it was felt necessary to conduct this study with the aim of pointing out the role of the injection site in the reduction of pain, and of providing data to prove this.…”

“…For this reason, the use of techniques which reduce leakage of the medication and a suitable injection site will reduce the pain felt during and after intramuscular injection [4] . One of these techniques is the choice of a suitable site for the injection such as the ventrogluteal area, which has little subcutaneous fatty tissue [5] .…”

“…Moreover, the dorsogluteal muscle is the one used by MHNs to administer LAAIs, which is probably due to the fact that most of the preparations available are licensed for this site (Greenway, 2004). Secondly Wynaden et al (2006) suggested that MHNs preferred to use the site due to it being perceived as more discreet for the service user than the ventrogluteal site.…”

“…In addition, the ratio of nurses who said they could easily apply IMI to the VG site increased from 31.11% to 53.33%. Greenway (2004) stated that the nurses' knowledge and skills in the use of VG sites are not adequate and that they lack the confidence to carry out the skills unaided. Therefore, they are reluctant to use this site.…”
