Using the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests to Measure Change: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Nineteen boys aged 6 through 8 years were pretested with the preliminary edition of the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT) (Ayres, 1984). They subsequently received 6 months of twice weekly occupational therapy with sensory integration intervention in a school setting and were then posttested with the preliminary edition of the SIPT. Significant improvement was seen in scores of grouped data on tests of praxis, somatovestibular functioning, and bilateral integration and sequencing. Individual improvem… Show more

“…The SIPT is the “ gold standard ” measure for assessing sensory discrimination and sensorimotor disorders (6, 7, 35, 8184). The test is a battery of 17 subtests designed to assess four factors: (1) tactile processing and discrimination; (2) vestibular and proprioceptive processing; (3) praxis and bilateral integration and sequencing; and (4) perception of shape and space and visuomotor coordination.…”

“…These include physiotherapy, Sensory Integration Occupational Therapy including Le Bon Depart, DDAT treatment, neurophysiology (primitive reflex), Davis method, sound and light therapy, fish oil supplement and audio therapy. However, there have been relatively few studies confirming the effectivity of these approaches in terms of the impact they have on the SIPT outcome measures (Kimball, 1990).…”

“…The results from the new standardised tests are scored and interpreted by computer in the USA (Falrgrleve, 1989), adding cost and time to the interpretation of results. Kimball (1990) looked at using the SIPT to measure change; the results suggested that it was more effective than the SCSIT at measuring change but that the results were inconclusive and further research was required. Fairgrieve (1989) states that the Test of Motor ImpairmentHenderson Revision (Stott et ai, 1984) provides sufficiently precise information about a child's difficulty to indicate whether or not occupational therapy would be appropriate.…”
