Using the past to contextualize anthropogenic impacts on the present and future distribution of an endemic Caribbean mammal

Abstract: Island species are difficult to conserve because they face the synergy of climate change, invasive species, deforestation, and increasing human population densities in areas where land mass is shrinking. The Caribbean island of Hispaniola presents particular challenges because of geopolitical complexities that span 2 countries and hinder coordinated management of species across the island. We employed species distribution modeling to evaluate the impacts of climatic change and anthropogenic activities on the d… Show more

“…Hispaniola is currently divided into two nations with approximately the same population size but differing areas: the larger Dominican Republic in the east and smaller Haiti in the west. Hispaniola's geotectonic history naturally split species into north/south rather than east/west ranges, resulting in species that are distributed across similar ecosystems but face unequal anthropogenic threats built on centuries of differences across a colonial boundary [56].…”

“…To model habitat suitability of L. speciosa, we used the program Maxent version 3.4.1. 47 which has demonstrated good performance in the projections of current and future climate habitat distributions 50,51 . This program only requires presence data 3,[52][53][54][55] .…”
