Using the cloud for records storage: issues of trust

Abstract: Organisations cannot avoid working in the cloud and therefore records are being stored in the cloud either by design or by default. This raises important issues of trust in using third-party cloud service providers for storing records and digital archival collections. What factors contribute to trust in the decision-making process? What are the implications that archives and records (ARM) professionals need to understand and assess? This article discusses findings from an international research project that ex… Show more

“…Models for assessing and monitoring the economic viability and sustainability of cloud storage services should be seriously considered, since these issues are key to trusting in cloud storage services and in service providers to give a fair deal and continue to uphold their agreement. 41 Despite research into the value and development of models, there is little published evidence of their application in practice. The study discussed here helps to fill that gap.…”

“…According to Richards (2014), cloud records storage is a form of IT provision that treats computing as a set of services that can be purchased on demand through networks. McLeod and Gormly (2017) argue that organisations cannot avoid working in the cloud because records are being stored in the cloud, either by design or by default. This issue of cloud records storage becomes the most important concern for archivists and records managers.…”

“…There is a growing interest in the implementation of cloud storage services which exposes university libraries to a new set of threats and vulnerabilities. McLeod and Gormly [13] concluded that if cloud service providers are to be used, their security, viability, sustainability, and trustworthiness must be paramount.…”
