Using Taguchi method to optimise performance and product cost at the conceptual stage of design

Abstract: The difficulty of obtaining a useful cost estimate at the design stage has long been acknowledged. Data for new products are hardly available and product specifications are often expressed as a range of values; yet, only limited progress has been made to date to improve the quality of the average cost estimate at the conceptual design stage. The aim of this research is to improve the quality of the cost estimate (average cost) at the conceptual stage of design to assist designers to consider cost as a critical… Show more

“…Table 1 shows that most of the clustering efforts presented in the literature focus on the end of the development phases. However, during developmental projects, the majority of decisions are made during the early stages (Martin et al, 2007;McAloone and Bey, 2009;Saravi et al, 2013;Shehab and Abdalla, 2001;Zrim et al, 2006). When a development decision is made, it is typically expensive to change it.…”

“…Matrix-based approach was widely used approach for functional synthesis, 31 which is always the lack of a uniform interface representation model, such as kinematic state pair-based functional model proposed in this article, to enable functional synthesis with a general interface representation model. At the same time, cost is an important factor in mechanism transmission, so how to integrate functional synthesis of mechanisms with cost is also an important issue.…”

“…29 As over 70% of the production cost of a product is determined during the conceptual design stage, reducing the cost of a product at the conceptual design stage is an effective way. 30,31 The above approaches could achieve combinatorial exhaustive solutions, in the absence of cost of mechanisms. However, how to produce optimal solutions of mechanisms with low cost is an important issue in the current product design.…”

“…The experiments were carried out according to Taguchi’s orthogonal array (OA), as Taguchi’s method had been successfully used to optimize many manufacturing process parameters. 1416 Besides shrinkage, the influence of chosen process parameters on tensile strength (TS) of the investment cast part has also been studied. Furthermore, confirmatory experiments have been conducted to validate the obtained optimal settings for LS, VS and TS of the IC part.…”
