Using Systems Thinking to Understand and Enlarge Mental Models: Helping the Transition to a Sustainable World

Abstract: Sustainability and climate change are massive global problems that stem from the industrial world's relentless pursuit of growth. Transitioning to a sustainable world requires understanding citizen mental models and our addiction to short-term rewards. This paper uses causal loop diagramming (CLD) to describe the general, prevailing citizen viewpoint and to propose a wider mental model that takes the natural world and sustainability into account. The corporate profit model that depicts the wider view acknowled… Show more

“…Kahneman [27], (pp. [20][21] explains that there are two systems of thinking, called generically System 1 and System 2: "System 1 operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control. System 2 allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations".…”

“…System 1 processes emotional information received by the sensory system and transforms it into emotional knowledge which creates impressions, intuitions, and feelings. System 2 processes rational information and transforms it into rational knowledge which creates concepts, ideas, theories, and mental models [20,28,29]. These two thinking systems interact continuously across the invisible interface between the cognitive unconscious and our consciousness [30,31].…”

“…This was explored via the development of a preliminary causal loop diagram (CLD) to identify important feedback loops. In the systems thinking field, CLD is a powerful tool for dealing with complex problems which has the ability to uncover the underlying feedback structures and leverage points in a system [9][10][11]. Moreover, causal loop modelling has been widely applied in health systems research [12][13][14].…”

“…It is a powerful tool for identifying the non-linear feedback loops that operate in the system to amplify or balance outcomes. It can help stakeholders to converge on a shared mental model of a system, a set of beliefs, values, and assumptions that underly why things work as they do [ 27 ]. This shared understanding about how something works and what is important can be used to enhance policy setting and decision-making.…”
