Using System Dynamics to assess the impact of RFID technology on retail operations

Abstract: The application of item-level Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in retail supply chains creates cost savings and promises large potential benefits from revenue growth. However, the economic assessment of the impact on improved store operations, labor utilization, and increased sales is still not fully explored. We propose to use System Dynamics as a structural modeling and simulation approach to integrate conventional return on investment evaluations. Building on previous research about RFID tec… Show more

“…Various technologies can be applied to enhance business activities such as inventory management, distribution, manufacturing, and even customer service. For example, the use of bar code systems in managing the retail operations could help the small businesses to identify products electronically, and facilitate inventory control and replenishment activities at the store level (De Marco, Cagliano, Nervo, & Rafele, 2012). Moreover, the IT tools are utilised to transmit, communicate, and share information within the business entity and supply chain partners.…”

“…For example, Lesserrevealed that the USwasbeing unreasonablypractical indirectlysubsidizing wind power generation because this subsidy mode aggravates market distortion [8]. Marco and Sánchez-Braza studied the influence of subsidy modes on solar energy [9,10]. The difference between the two lies in the fact thatthe former focused on capital subsidies whereas the latter emphasized property tax incentives.…”

“…SD stresses holistic consideration of the entire system, understanding structures within the system and their interaction through systematic thinking. SD uses computer simulations to display how system structure, policy, and delay affect the system's development and stability (De Marco et al, 2012). System Dynamics focuses on neither forecast nor single trend developments, but rather focuses on the causes behind complex changes, i.e.…”
