Using simulators for teaching computer organization and architecture

Abstract: An important problem in teaching the subjects of Computer Architecture and Organization (CO&CA) is the linking of the theoretical knowledge with the practical experience. Visualization of different computer hardware architectures with the use of the simulators enhances the learning process among students. Many useful computer simulators can help address this issue by covering various aspects of CO&CA. The programs range from simple simulators to specific teaching tools to advanced and specialized software. We … Show more

“…Educators have employed simulators and other resources in many areas of education, ever since the proliferation of personal computers. These techniques heighten student motivation, engage them in active roles, and develop personal approaches to learning [9,19]. Simulators visually display concepts in an interactive context and represent conceptual reasoning through graphical displays.…”

“…As shown in later sections, the experiments have also been redesigned in such a way that all students can work on the same experiments and achieve the same learning outcomes regardless of the systems they use. This backbone also enables us to integrate other non‐Cisco systems such as VyOS and pfSense in the experiments. VyOS is a community development “fork” of the Linux based router Vyatta that provides software‐based routing, firewall, and VPN functionality.…”

“…New concepts and applications such as computer‐aided instruction (CAI), computer‐aided learning (CAL), computer‐based instruction (CBI), computer‐based training (CBT), distance education, distance learning, e‐learning, web‐based learning have been widely used depending on development of information technology and internet. In the literature, there are many studies belonging to the field of engineering : communication , computer [21,36], control [38,42], electrical machines [2,20], power electronics [19,50], power systems [18,29], robotics [6,15], image processing , digital signal processing , etc. Studies which belong to signals and systems concept can be summarized as follows: Teaching signals and systems topics containing continuous and discrete convolution, Laplace transforms, z‐transforms, Fourier transforms, analog and digital filter design, etc.…”
