Using simulation to manage project supply chain in the offshore oil and gas industry

Abstract: This paper is aimed at comparing simulation against spreadsheets as decision support tools to properly manage project supply chain in the offshore oil and gas industry. The paper presents a case study related to the problem of sizing a chain for pipeline laying from an offshore field in the Barents sea to the Russian coast. Results obtained through a spreadsheet developed by an oil and gas company have been compared to the ones gathered from an ad hoc simulation model. A simulation model with no stochastic var… Show more

“…Since SC security-related problems seemed too ill structured to allow a simulation-based approach (Cigolini et al 2011(Cigolini et al , 2014(Cigolini et al , 2015, a case-based methodology has been chosen. Case studies are a powerful approach to understand complex phenomena, and whenever there is the need to answer to how and why questions (Yin 2003).…”

“…The use of simulation as the tool to handle the stochastic nature of the problem was decided by the authors based on the numerous advantages encountered by researchers (e.g. Cigolini et al, 2015;Parthanadee et al, 2014;Wainer 2009;Law 2006;Banks 1998). For our case, the flexibility of the tool to assess the feasibility of different distribution scenarios, and to communicate and explain company managers the results was the most important advantage obtained from its use.…”
