Using Self-Awareness as a Means to Reduce Energy Consumption

Abstract: During a period of 6 months, 16 previously homeless male participants from a small town in the UK were encouraged to adopt an intrinsic and environmentally responsible attitude. The aim was specifically to reduce the participants' energy consumption. This was done through self-awareness sessions in parallel with traditional environmental educational sessions. Self-awareness was in this study used as a tool to help guide the participants towards a positive sense of self through the engagement of energy saving b… Show more

“…Additionally, the public is increasingly engaged in various environmental activities and initiatives, such as tree planting, community cleaning, and environmental advocacy, which not only improve community environmental quality but also help to enhance air quality [ 42 ]. Everyday energy-saving and emission-reduction measures adopted by the public, like conserving water and electricity, recycling, and waste sorting, further reduce environmental pollution [ 51 ]. This heightened environmental awareness also influences policy-making; as more people start paying attention to environmental issues, governments and policymakers are more likely to implement policies favoring environmental protection, such as raising emissions standards, supporting renewable energy, and reinforcing environmental protection regulations [ 52 , 53 ].…”

“…Thus, this aspect can help regulate oneself from trying and purchasing various products at the same time. Several studies have shown that the higher one's self-awareness, the lower the prevalence to exhibit consumptive behavior (Cloherty & Jansson-Boyd, 2014;Sharma & Trivedi, 2020).…”

“…Likewise, as environmental awareness increases, it is expected to be more careful in energy consumption habits. The unconscious use of energy resources that threaten the environment and the world is limited, and natural resources such as water, electricity, and gas, which are used unnecessarily, are started to be used more efficiently (Cloherty & Boyd, 2014). There are also studies that talk about the relationships between consumers' self-awareness and green food consumption.…”
