Using Rotary Closed-Loop Drilling to Increase Operational Efficiency and Reduce Operational Risk

Abstract: This paper reviews the operational experience gained of utilizing Rotary Closed – Loop Steerable (RCLS) drilling technology on development drilling projects in the UKCS for the period 1997 – 2000. Despite the general decline in drilling activity in this period, there was a significant increase in RCLS drilling activity. Sufficient operational experience has now been gained to a) fully evaluate the impact of the new technology on the drilling operation and to b) make a comparison of RCLS system performance agai… Show more

“…After product release, reliability improvements are made by applying the learnings from the field failures to improve product design. Johnstone and Gruenhagen, 2001 suggested distance drilled between failures (DDBF) as an alternative reliability measure to represent the value derived from running the downhole tool. The total footage drilled over several tool runs is calculated and divided by the number of failures.…”

“…The rotary closed-loop system (Gruenhagen 2002;Johnston 2001) enables continuous steering while rotating and incorporates multiple propagation resistivity and gamma-ray measurements. Combined with an automated directional control, the system reduces hole tortuosity, differential sticking and, generally provides a more in-gauge hole.…”
