Reviews have long been recognized as among the most important forms of scientific communication. The rapid growth of the primary literature has further increased the need for reviews to distill and interpret the literature. This review on Reviews and Reviewing: Approaches to Research Synthesis encompasses the evolution of the review literature, taxonomy of review literature, uses and users of reviews, the process of preparing reviews, assessment of review quality and impact, the impact of information technology on the preparation of reviews, and research opportunities for information science related to reviews and reviewing. In addition to providing a synthesis of prior research, this review seeks to identify gaps in the published research and to suggest possible future research directions.

Understanding the business model phenomenon in complex business environments necessitates a dynamic ecosystem perspective. However, the lack of "construct clarity" significantly impedes this understanding, persistently challenging the theoretical and empirical development of business models. Through a theory-driven integrative literature review, this study aims to overcome this obstacle by leveraging Bertalanffy’s general systems theory (GST) and its core "open system" logic to clarify the business model construct within an ecosystem context. Reviewing 246 sources, the study identifies key issues within the research gaps and applies GST to critically analyse existing research on conceptualizing business models. It thereby defines a business model as an open system modelling iterative activities at the ecosystem level and enhances construct clarity across four basic elements: definition, scope condition, relationship with related concepts, and theoretical coherence. Additionally, the study introduces the "EBM" framework, illustrating how a business model's interconnected structure and dynamic nature align with open system logic, leading to the proposal of six research themes for future theoretical development. By bridging the research gap, this study clarifies a fundamental strategic and organizational concept, fostering a mindset-shifting understanding of business models from a broader, dynamic open system perspective while promoting interdisciplinary communication through the "unity in diversity" capability of GST.

Over the past decade, scholarly work has surged around grand societal challenges, such as climate change, public health, and poverty, often framed by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These complex and global issues demand innovative organization design solutions. The “Organizing for Good” campaign, launched by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Organizational Design Community (ODC), aims to spotlight, curate, and stimulate research and practices contributing to the SDGs. This introductory essay serves as a prologue to a special issue in the Journal of Organization Design, which closely aligned with the campaign’s objectives. It delves into the concept of organization design as a tool for addressing these challenges, viewing organization designs as problem-solving systems for collective action. Furthermore, it provides an overview of how the SDGs intersect with the scholarly community focusing on organization design, previews the content of articles featured in this special issue, and raises questions for future research.
