Antioxidant Content Determination in Ripe Date Fruits (Phoenix dactylifera L.): a Scoping Review

Ripe date fruits are a rich source of antioxidants. The current scoping review was conducted to identify various characteristics of studies that were carried out to determine antioxidant content in ripe date fruits. The framework established by Arksey and O’Malley was adopted to conduct this scoping review. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) was used as a guide during the review process. Relevant studies published in March 2019 or any time before were retrieved from three databases. Study selection was performed based on specific inclusion criteria. The extracted data from selected studies were organized in a charting table, and then analyzed using descriptive statistics. A sum of thirty-one articles were selected and included in the present scoping review. Various characteristics of the selected studies, collected ripe date fruit samples, and extraction solvents, as well as information about determining antioxidant content and the used analytical methods, citation references for procedures, measurement units, and data presentation methods, have been identified and discussed carefully. High inconsistency and variability were observed among the selected studies. The research gaps and future recommendations to promote higher research design consistency and improve research quality in this area of research have been described.

RESUMEN:Uno de los problemas más comunes en las revistas científicas, es el incumplimiento de los estilos al hacer citas y escribir las referencias bibliográficas, debido al descuido o bien al desconocimiento de los diferentes sistemas existentes y sus características. El objetivo fue revisar los estilos de citas y referencias utilizados por revistas odontológicas indexadas en la red SciELO, con el fin describir los más utilizados y evidenciar las diferencias existentes entre las revistas. Fueron revisados 100 artículos pertenecientes a 20 revistas diferentes, seleccionados aleatoriamente por afijación proporcional. El estilo más utilizado para las citas y referencias bibliográficas correspondió al sistema Vancouver. Sólo una revista, International Journal of Odontostomatology publica sus artículos bajo el sistema Harvard. Estos estilos sirven como un sello de las revistas, pero constituyen una carga de trabajo adicional significativa, ya que la atención a los detalles que se requieren para asegurar que las citas y referencias se ajusten a los estilos individuales de las revistas es fundamental. Cualquiera sea el estilo de la revista, es importante utilizarlo de una manera consistente. La responsabilidad de la exactitud en las citas y referencias bibliográficas es de los autores, por lo que deben preocuparse de ello al redactar el artículo, en su revisión final previo al envío, así como en las pruebas de imprenta.PALABRAS CLAVE: referencias bibliográficas, estilos de referencias, citas, Vancouver, Harvard, escritura científica. INTRODUCCIÓNAl escribir un artículo científico, hay muchas barreras que superar. Una de ellas, que requiere tiempo, esfuerzo y atención, es la correcta citación y referenciación de los artículos que darán el soporte y evidencia en cualquier investigación. Los diferentes sistemas o estilos exigidos por las revistas, tanto para citas en el texto como para las referencias bibliográfi-cas, demandan una atención significativa hasta el últi-mo detalle, lo cual constituye un desafío para la publicación (Harries et al., 2013).Las citas y referencias bibliográficas tienen un rol importante en cualquier trabajo científico; proporcionan una manera rápida de revisar antecedentes históricos, documentan investigaciones que apoyan hechos u opiniones expresadas en el artículo, reconocen el trabajo de otros y le entregan al lector fuentes de información adicional sobre el tema. Así, estas no sólo deben ser pertinentes, si no que también exactas y coherentes (Laskin, 1996;Masic, 2013), donde todos los autores de algún artículo son responsables de la exactitud e integridad de las referencias (Riordan, 2012). Background: Medical writing is an important component of any research starting with writing a research protocol up to its culmination into presentations and publications. In spite of numerous mandatory academic projects being undertaken in India, the research output in peer-reviewed journals remains low. Lack of proficiency in medical writing has been cited as one of the important causes for same. We conducted a pre and post continued medical education (CME) multiple choice question (MCQ) questionnaire test to assess the baseline knowledge of the participants in this field and observe their improvement after the CME.
