Using remote sensing and GIS to detect and monitor land use and land cover change in Dhaka Metropolitan of Bangladesh during 1960–2005

Abstract: This paper illustrates the result of land use/cover change in Dhaka Metropolitan of Bangladesh using topographic maps and multi-temporal remotely sensed data from 1960 to 2005. The Maximum likelihood supervised classification technique was used to extract information from satellite data, and post-classification change detection method was employed to detect and monitor land use/cover change. Derived land use/cover maps were further validated by using high resolution images such as SPOT, IRS, IKONOS and field d… Show more

“…Satellites data have became a major application in change detection because of the repetitive coverage of the satellites at short time intervals (Mas, 1999). Using remote sensing, spatially explicit time series of environmental data can be quickly obtained and updated (Dewan and Yamaguchi, 2009). In addition, GIS (Geographical Information System) technique provides the software's to spatial analysis, model and map environmental changes.…”

“…Urbanization is often characterized by severe changes that directly affect the human environment and are accompanied by highly negative influences on the global carbon cycle, such as an increase in an increase in atmospheric CO2 [12,13]. Moreover, the absence of proper urban plans in developing countries to deal with this dilemma has caused several additional problems such as inadequate housing supply, haphazard development, urban poverty, and inequity of land supply, which lead to the rapid emergence of slums and unplanned urban areas [13].…”

“…Las muestras de aprendizaje fueron de un tamaño aproximado de 100 píxeles (90.000 m 2 ) que sirvieron para definir las diferentes clases espectrales. A partir de esta información espectral se obtuvo la imagen clasificada utilizando para ello el método de máxima probabilidad (Dewan et al, 2009). Para analizar la fiabilidad de cada clasificación realizada se obtuvo la matriz de confusión.…”
