Using Recent BCI Literature to Deepen our Understanding of Clinical Neurofeedback: A Short Review

Abstract: In their recent paper, Alkoby et al. (2017) provide the readership with an extensive and very insightful review of the factors influencing NeuroFeedback (NF) performance. These factors are drawn from both the NF literature and the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) literature. Our short review aims to complement Alkoby et al.'s review by reporting recent additions to the BCI literature. The object of this paper is to highlight this literature and discuss its potential relevance and usefulness to better understand … Show more

“…This issue is currently being investigating. Notably, a lot of effort is dedicated to better understand the factors (e.g., users' states and profile) influencing one's responsiveness to NF in order then to design procedures adapted to each user/athlete 42 . Finally, beyond this aspect of NF efficacy, an exciting challenge (in order to achieve high proficiency) will consist in integrating this procedure in a coherent and motivating global training strategy which enables an efficient transfer of skills on the field, possibly using virtual reality.…”

“…The impact of potential side effects of social aspects in BCI and NF applications remains to be investigated. Such consideration would be in line with recent developments in the field, i.e., focus towards user-centered [40] and individualized design [41] of MI NF/BCI implementations.…”

“…Accurate assessments of strategies, motivation, cognitive state but also of personality traits (Jeunet et al, 2015a(Jeunet et al, , 2018 are key to interpret the learning curve and the effects of NF training. Our questionnaire inquiring about strategies, fatigue, motivation, perceived performance, and confidence in the feedback gave us valuable qualitative knowledge about how subjects in the BiDim group reacted to the complexity of the feedback.…”
