Using prototypes in early pervasive game development

Abstract: In this article we discuss various prototyping methods in early pervasive game development. The focus is on pervasive games that are played with mobile phones. Choosing the right prototyping method is crucial in achieving results that can be used for validating or developing further design ideas. In this article we give guidelines that help the selection process and give ideas on methods that can be used in different situations.\ud \ud We have play-tested pervasive game prototypes using agile software prototyp… Show more

“…Manker [15] explores prototyping practices in computer game design and concludes that prototypes in game design are used in many ways: amongst others, to externalize specific parts of the game and as a 'shared representation' that serves as a communication tool. Ollila et al [18] present an overview of the use of prototypes in early pervasive game development, though the overview is limited to games on mobile phones. The authors present guidelines for selecting the right prototyping method, based on the type of project, the phase of the project, the type of game and the purpose of the project.…”

“…However, we believe these techniques can also be helpful for other mobile and ubicomp solutions, such as those that provide information when needed (e.g., portable guides) or those in which interaction is embedded in unplanned social practice or everyday routine, such as home communication systems (Nagel, Hudson, & Abowd, 2004). For example, Ollila, Suomela, and Holopainen (2008) discussed the use of paratyping to gather feedback from players of pervasive games, which put them in new kinds of social situations or require them to change their behavior. These kinds of applications and systems often have high prototyping costs.…”

“…Storyboards and drawings have been used as a method in participatory design research for decades [3,8,12]. Paper prototyping has been used for game design [9] and interface testing [1] while annotation tools have been used in humanities preservation. The technique described in this paper builds upon these and is named Layered Elaboration because it enables design groups to add ideas presented by others with layers of transparencies while encouraging design team members to expand on those earlier ideas.…”
