Using Product Data Management Systems for Civil Engineering Projects — Potentials and Obstacles

Abstract: Product data management (PDM) systems are well established in the mechanical engineering industry. Here, they form the standard solution for the central storage of all data concerning a product and the processes involved in its fabrication. Especially the consistent management of CAD models including sophisticated versioning techniques and access rights management as well as the integrated workflow management are attractive features for using PDM systems also for civil engineering projects. The paper investiga… Show more

“…However, the IFC do not currently include entities for modeling infrastructure constructions, such as roads and bridges, although corresponding extensions are under development (Yabuki et al 2006). On the other hand, the neutral data format LandXML provides a means for exchanging roadway design data (Ji et al 2009).…”

“…In the 1990s most data became electronic and the PDM system spurred companies to realize the importance of data handling. [7][8] Concerns about product development and time usage of design engineers ( Fig. 1 and Fig 2.) led to pressure to use the PDM system more effectively.…”

“…improving the total construction process and optimizing the workflow with help of machine control, logistics planning, virtual phase visualization, documentation and data management. State-of-the-art technology like PDM-systems and close range identification were used to help reaching the targets [3][4][5][6][7] . Several academic researchers have also researched lately the potentials of ICT-related construction management [8][9][10] .…”
