Using prefrailty to detect early disability

Abstract: Introduction:In an aging population, new strategies are required to identify individuals at risk of adverse health outcomes. Frailty syndrome is related to negative health events. This increased risk may be used to identify individuals in which interventions can delay the onset of physical and functional complications. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the onset of frailty and the beginning of functional disability.Materials and Methods:This was a cross-sectional observational stud… Show more

“…As frailty and pre-frailty syndrome were common in COPD patients, and given that clinical outcomes of patients with frailty could be reversed using multidisciplinary intervention (especially at the pre-frailty stage),27 early recognition of this syndrome among COPD patients is critical. Examining for risk factors, such as comorbid cancer, a history of hospitalization, over-/undernutrition, or sarcopenia (using handgrip strength and gait speed for screening according to the AWGS recommendation), would be beneficial in order for early intervention, such as comprehensive geriatric assessment, physical therapy referral, and nutritional intervention, to take place 2,3,10.…”

“…Frailty and pre-frailty are common in patients with COPD; however, using multidisciplinary intervention, patients with frailty can be reversed, especially at the pre-frailty stage 120. Therefore, it is critical to diagnose frailty at an early stage.…”

“…Prefrailty is the state between robustness and frailty, in which one or two of the five criteria are met (Blaum, Xue, Michelon, Semba, & Fried, ). As a transitional status between robust and frailty, prefrailty has been reported to be associated with chronic comorbidity (Danon‐Hersch, Rodondi, Spagnoli, & Santos‐Eggimann, ) and functional decline (Acosta‐Benito & Sevilla‐Machuca, ). Frailty has been established to be a risk factor for falls (Kojima, ).…”
