Using pilot trials to test geochemical treatment of acid mine drainage on Stockton Plateau

Abstract: Herbert Stream, a tributary of the Waimangaroa River on the Stockton Plateau, South Island, New Zealand, has elevated metal concentrations (Al 7.68 ppm, Fe 1.37 ppm, Mn 0.69 ppm, and Zn 0.12 ppm) and low pH (2.3-3.4) characteristic of acid mine drainage. Average flow rate is 5.3 L/s. To determine the effectiveness of different geochemical treatment strategies, small-scale trials consisting of a reducing and alkalinity producing system (RAPS), a limestone leaching bed (LLB), and an open limestone channel (OLC) … Show more

“…The objective is to determine the variability of AMD and identify factors that control AMD chemistry before release into the receiving stream and river environment. Improved prediction of mine drainage chemistry will assist optimal management and remediation strategies (Ellis 2008;Trumm et al 2008;McCauley et al in press).…”

“…This paper presents chemical data from immediately downstream of historic and current coal mines and identifies geological, hydro-geological, and mine operational factors that influence mine drainage chemistry. Recognition of the influence of these factors can be used to improve rehabilitation at historic mines and management strategies at current and future mines (Trumm et al 2008).…”

“…Trumm et al (2005Trumm et al ( , 20082010) summarised AMD chemistry and results from shortterm mesocosm field studies for remediating AMD from Sullivan Mine, an abandoned underground coal mine within the Brunner Coal Measures, other sites at Stockton Coal Mine, and in the Pike River area. In general, results of this study showed comparable or better metal removal rates and efficiencies to those presented by Trumm et al (2005Trumm et al ( , 20082010) and others (e.g. Gusek 2002;Gusek & Wildeman 2002;Rose & Dietz 2002;Thomas & Romanek 2002b;Gusek 2004;Watzlaf et al 2004;Reisman et al 2008).…”
