Photovoice is a qualitative, participatory research method with great potential for increased use across settings and disciplines in sub-Saharan Africa. The method originated over 30 years ago with two women researchers in reproductive health and has since been used across disciplines in diverse settings globally. Despite its origin within the social and cultural contexts of China in 1992, the method has been used predominantly in settings in the global North and West. There is ample opportunity to employ the method in sub-Saharan African contexts as a powerful, versatile research method. This paper highlights the current use of the photovoice research method in sub-Saharan Africa, with a specific focus on Uganda. We aim to demystify photovoice and advocate for more use of the method as a participatory approach in tackling major current transdisciplinary challenges across the globe. We introduce the method, describe the historical and philosophical underpinnings, illustrate use of the method through two examples of our photovoice research in Uganda, and discuss its challenges and benefits.

Currently, the most successful prevention interventions against sexual violence (SV) on United States college campuses target modifications at the individual and interpersonal levels. Community-level interventions have been under-developed for college campuses. To address this gap, we employ a citizen science model for understanding campus community factors affecting SV risk. The model, called Our Voice, starts by engaging groups of college students to collect data in their own communities, identifying factors they view as increasing the risk of SV. In facilitated meetings, participants then review and analyze their collective data and use it to generate actionable community-level solutions and advocate for them with local decision-makers. We share findings from a first-generation study of the Our Voice model applied to SV prevention on one college campus, and include recommendations for further research.

is currently a contract staff member in Accounting Education within the Social Science Cluster of the School of Education in the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Prior to joining academia in 2014, she spent over fifteen years in the corporate world in diverse fields of Accounting in both Nigeria and South Africa. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1991 in Nigeria, she has worked in various industries performing key accounting roles such as Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Audit. She rose to the position of the divisional Finance Director in 2001 overseeing the finance arm of a Packaging business. She also experienced the South African business world while working with Sifax South Africa between 2007 and 2009. In quest of a career in education, she commenced a certificate course in teaching in 2013 after which she started lecturing in the UKZN School of Education in 2014. At the same time, she embarked on her doctoral journey in 2014 for the next five years ending September 2018. Her research pursuit which basically draws on her doctoral studies, focuses on the fields of assessment, cognitive demand and textbooks within the domain of Accounting education. More recently, her research focus has expanded, and now includes curriculum preparedness for the 4 th industrial revolution classroom and virtual learning in the South African context.
