Using Phenomenology to Examine the Experiences of Family Caregivers of Patients with Advanced Head and Neck Cancer: Reflections of a Novice Researcher

Abstract: Faced with a number of research methods, astute researchers carefully choose the method of research most appropriate for their inquiry. Even when there is a goodness of fit between the research design selected to conduct the study and the topic of interest, all designs pose challenges for investigators that need to be considered and addressed. This paper represents the reflections of a novice researcher regarding the issues and decisions made in the course of selecting a phenomenological approach to conduct re… Show more

“…Data were analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method, which was justified because it is suitable for exploring lived experiences (Colaizzi, 1978;Mackey, 2005). The analysis proceeded in seven partly overlapping stages (Burns & Grove, 2005;Colaizzi, 1978;Penner & McClement, 2008). The first author listened to the recorded interviews and then transcribed them verbatim, which helped give a good overview of the data.…”

“…The purpose of phenomenology is, therefore, to describe the lived experiences of people, and the documentation of that experience should be done in such a way that it is true to the lives of the people described (Anderson, 1991). Lived experiences are those influenced by internal or external forces but involve conscious life events before both reflection and interpretation (Penner & McClement, 2008). Phenomenology is therefore suited to this study precisely because it is only those who have lived with HIV/AIDS and have been on HAART that can tell the story of their lived experiences, and only they are the experts in telling this story.…”

“…Probes were used to clarify the meanings of responses and encourage participants' in-depth explanations (Lester, 1999;Penner & McClement, 2008;Waters, 2016) and rich descriptions of their "conscious experience" (Martin, 2010, p. 1). As a result, participants detailed "the phenomenon in their consciousness" (Wikispaces, 2015, p. 1), rendering valuable idiomatic narratives that supported understandings of the phenomena.…”
