To fully harness Grids, users or middlewares must have some knowledge on the topology of the platform interconnection network. As such knowledge is usually not available, one must uses tools which automatically build a topological network model through some measurements. In this article, we define a methodology to assess the quality of these network model building tools, and we apply this methodology to representatives of the main classes of model builders and to two new algorithms. We show that none of the main existing techniques build models that enable to accurately predict the running time of simple application kernels for actual platforms. However some of the new algorithms we propose give excellent results in a wide range of situations. Comme cette connaissance n'est généralement pas disponible a priori, on doit avoir recours a des outils construisant un modèle du réseau d'interconnexionà partir de mesures. Dans cet article nous définissons une méthodologie pourévaluer la qualité de ces outils de construction de modèles de réseau, et nous l'appliquonsà des représentants des principaux types de reconstructeurs de topologies, ainsi qu'à deux nouveaux algorithmes. Nous montrons qu'aucune des techniques existantes ne produit des modèles qui permettent de prédire avec précision le temps d'exécution sur les plates-formes actuelles de simples noyaux d'applications. Au contraire, un des nouveaux algorithmes obtient de très bons résultats dans des situations très variées.

Abstract-Our work is motivated by two observations about the state of networks today. Operators have little visibility into the end users' network experience while end users have little information or recourse when they encounter problems. We propose a system called NetProfiler, in which end hosts share network performance information with other hosts over a peer-to-peer network. The aggregated information from multiple hosts allows NetProfiler to profile the wide-area network, i.e., monitor end-to-end performance, and detect and diagnose problems from the perspective of end hosts. We define a set of attribute hierarchies associated with end hosts and their network connectivity. Information on the network performance and failures experienced by end hosts is then aggregated along these hierarchies, to identify patterns (e.g., shared attributes) that might be indicative of the source of the problem. In some cases, such sharing of information can also enable end hosts to resolve problems by themselves. The results from a 4-week-long Internet experiment indicate the promise of this approach.

Abstract. Knowledge of link capacity is important for network design, management, and utilization. With the increasing popularity of asymmetric link technologies (such as DSL, 1xRTT, and satellite links), it is desirable to have a capacity estimation technique, which can simultaneously measure forward and backward direction link capacities on an Internet path. Moreover, this estimation must often be "sender only", because of receiver limitations or lack of standards. In this study, we propose a simple, fast and accurate technique, called AsymProbe, to estimate asymmetric link capacities. AsymProbe is a "sender only", round trip procedure. It achieves asymmetric link capacity estimation by strategically altering the ratio of probe and acknowledgement packet sizes. Using simulation and testbed experiments, we validate AsymProbe with a variety of network configurations. The results show that AsymProbe can correctly estimate the asymmetric link capacities as long as an appropriate packet size ratio can be employed.
