Using of leather fibers as an additive in elastomeric compounds: Its effect on curing behavior and physico‐mechanical properties

Abstract: In this study, leather fibers have been used as an additive in several elastomeric compounds based on nitryl butadiene rubber (NBR), chloroprene rubber (CR), ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM), and chlorinated isobutylene-isoprene rubber (CIIR). The effects of employing fibers upon vulcanization characteristics, physico-mechanical and thermal properties of the compounds were studied. Measuring of vulcanization characteristics of the compounds exhibited that leather fibers has no considerable effect on ini… Show more

“…Furthermore, the chromed leather shavings can be also used to prepare activated carbon , absorbent of pollutions , degreaser , ceramic , etc. By contrast, the researches on incorporating the chromed leather shavings as functional reinforcements in polymer composites have gained much more importance . As the leather fibers have a lot of surface reactive functional groups, compared to the other fibrous reinforcements like plant fiber , glass fiber , and cellulose , the properties of leather‐like composites are expected to be improved greatly.…”

“…This is not only caused seriously environmental problem but also wasted a large amount of collagen fiber with many valuable features [1][2]. In recent years, using leather solid waste as an ingredient for new materials have received much attention of many research groups [3][4][5]. Leather particles have been used as reinforcements for polymer composite materials to modify physical and mechanical properties such as density, hardness, abrasion resistance, tensile strength, flexibility, process ability and so on.…”
