Using multiple mini interviews as a pre-screening tool for medical student candidates completing international health electives

Abstract: There continues to be an increase in the number of learners who participate in international health electives (IHEs). However, not all learners enter IHEs with the same level of knowledge, attitude, and previous experience, which puts undue burden on host supervisors and poses risks to student and patient safety. The Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) is a technique that has become a popular method for undergraduate and postgraduate-level health science admissions programs. This paper describes the MMI process used… Show more

“…Future objectives of the WP are to improve the selection procedure (e.g. through mini interviews as a pre-departure tool [41], to better quantify the impact of the elective experience through questionnaires administered before and after departure, and to develop additional outcome measures (other than self-reports) focusing on provider behaviour, clinical knowledge, and quality of patient care [14].…”

“…Another future objective is to improve the selection procedure (e.g. through mini interviews as a pre-departure tool) [59]. Additional aims are to have structured feedback from local supervisors and local communities, to better quantify the impact of the elective experience through questionnaires administered before and after departure, and to develop additional outcome measures (other than self-reports) focusing on provider behaviour, clinical knowledge, and quality of patient care [15].…”

“…Moreover, although the interview was used, traditional interviews were less focused on the non-cognitive part. We argue that MMI, widely used in the health education sector (Satterfield et al, 2018), could be a powerful instrument in the education program. Our result supports this discussion, which showed the MMI result is coherent with our quantitative data.…”
