Using Multimedia Technology to Help Combat the Negative Effects of Protective Isolation on Patients: The Open Window Project ‐ An Engineering Challenge

Abstract: The Open Window project was established with the aim of creating a "virtual window" for each patient who is confined to protective isolation due to treatment for illness. This virtual window as developed provides a range of media or experiences. This paper describes the approach taken to the system design and discusses initial experiences with implementing such a system in a critical care setting. The system design was predicated on two guiding principles. Firstly it should be intuitive to use and the technolo… Show more

“…In circumstances where the environment cannot be physically and creatively constructed, hospital design teams should consider how projection technology can be used imaginatively to produce a creative use of space (e.g. Hegarty et al, 2009). With the emergence of children’s preference for wildlife and naturalistic representation from this and other studies, with both child (e.g.…”

“…The window is created using a video projector and audio speakers. A remote control allows the patient to switch art channels or open onto a number of ‘virtual places’ that provide a range of art, media, or experiences . The aims of OW are to reduce the sense of isolation and provide an opportunity for reflection and a sense of connection with the outside world.…”

“…Most of the students used new technology on a daily basis to access their arts and leisure interests: 92% used their computers on a daily basis and 75% a digital device (such as iPod or iPad) or smartphone. New technology offers huge potential to bring the humanities into other environments, such as hospitals53 and to ensure patients have continued access to their important, regenerative and sustaining arts and leisure activities 54…”
