Using Multi-Agent Systems in a Companion Modelling Approach for Agroecosystem Management in South-East Asia

Abstract: This paper describes research using multi-agent systems as a companion modelling tool to address key issues related to agroecosystem management in northern Thailand and northern Vietnam. The authors illustrate an approach for the use of complex models for the accompaniment of adaptive management experiences. First, some considerations on the shifts of paradigm that underlie the research are discussed. Then two case studies are presented. The first one illustrates the iterative process of problem solving with l… Show more

“…Participatory modeling is an efficient way to gather information and, more importantly, to stimulate discussion among different stakeholders (van Noordwijk et al 2001;Bousquet et al 2007). Because data is often lacking on the relationships among components of modeled socioecological systems, such simulations largely reflect local expert opinion.…”

“…Second, participatory modeling approaches can be problematic because of limitations associated with time, cost, bias, and validation (Matthews et al 2007). However, participatory modeling is a growing area of research, which can take many forms (Voinov and Bousquet 2010), and is especially promising given the advent of more http://www.ecologyandsociety.org/vol19/iss3/art41/ (Gurung et al 2006, Bousquet et al 2007, Smajgl 2010, Flaxman and Vargas-Moreno 2011, VargasMoreno and Flaxman 2012.…”

“…In this strategy, models are not used to quantify all of the key dynamics in qualitative narratives (cf. Bousquet et al 2007), but rather to challenge certain pivotal, recurring beliefs. For example, a belief that appears in mainstream discourse, detectable in several of the stories, is that large-scale irrigation development will reduce poverty (Molle et al 2009).…”

“…Before elaborating narratives, explore systemic relations qualitatively, using influence diagrams (SEI and CIFOR 2009), as well as more formal techniques, such as fuzzy cognitive mapping (Kok 2009), agent-based simulation (Bousquet et al 2007, Smajgl 2010, and system dynamics modeling (Alcamo 2008 Ecology and Society 18(4): 6 http://www.ecologyandsociety.org/vol18/iss4/art6/ 3. For a given specific scenario framework, generate additional, contrasting character-driven narratives.…”
