Using modern graph analysis techniques on mind maps to help quantify learning

Abstract: Abstract-In this work, we use a graph analysis tool to measure how student-created mind maps reflect learning. Mind maps consist of words and connections between words, and this visual tool helps illustrate how an individual understands how these words connect together in a field. From an analysis standpoint, mind maps are graphs consisting of nodes connected by edges. In the fall of 2011, students created three mind maps over the duration of a digital system design course, and at each of the three intervals, … Show more

“…The big advantage of this approach is the intuitive visual representation of knowledge, which supports the education process education (Jamieson, 2012). The validity of this presumption has been proven by various practical use cases in education.…”

“…During the past decade, researchers have turned to computational theories to evaluate CMs, such as graph theory (Ifenthaler, Masduki, & Seel, 2011; Jamieson, 2012; Stockwell, Smith, & Wiles, 2009; Tyumeneva, Kapuza, & Vergeles, 2017; Zouaq, Gasevic, & Hatala, 2011) and network theory (Frerichs et al , 2018; Koponen & Nousiainen, 2014; Siew, 2018; Stockwell et al , 2009; Zouaq et al , 2011). These new approaches have used information indices to evaluate the complexity of CMs (Bonchev & Buck, 2005), and several measures such as the hyperlink‐induced topic search (HITS) centrality or PageRank are used to evaluate the connectivity of CMs (Estrada, 2011; Newman, 2018).…”

“…Researchers have used different approaches with which to score mind maps. One approach compares mind maps of bounded concepts to a “golden model” mind map (Jamieson ). This approach does not apply in settings that lack a broadly accepted reference model, such as entrepreneurship education.…”
