Introduction/purpose: The study of vehicle suspension is a challenge for researchers in the field of vehicles regarding the impact of the suspension system on vehicle performances such as ride comfort, road holding, and working space. This paper presents the simulation of the Land Rover Defender 110 vehicle in the roll plane (half vehicle) in Simulink/MATLAB. The obtained results were compared with the results obtained in the ADAMS/CAR software package of the Land Rover Defender 110 simulation model previously experimentally validated. The Defender 110 vehicle has a dependent suspension system in both axles and a passive suspension type with four degrees of freedom (4 DOF). Methods: The equations of the system can be solved mathematically with a scheme in Simulink/MATLAB while half-vehicle modeling has been done in ADAMS/CAR. Results: The comparison of the vehicle characteristics obtained by the two simulation methods was done for three different scenarios, and it was noticed that there is a good correlation between them. Conclusion: It was concluded that the Defender 110 vehicle simulation model in Simulink/MATLAB is validated. The validated model can be used to perform suspension system optimization in future work.

Upon the vehicle conversion, the converter should ensure before putting the vehicle into service, that the modifications, carried out on the baseline vehicle, do not inhibit the ability of the converted vehicle to properly and surely perform its function. Any change to the vehicle weight distribution and center of gravity, which does not meet the manufacturer guidelines, may lead to excessive body roll and possible rollover. The aim of this work is to estimate degradation of the vehicle dynamic characteristics by recording on-road vehicle parameters on both baseline and converted vehicle. The experiments were carried out for the vehicles performing a double lane change maneuver at different speeds. The obtained results show excessive roll angle, lateral acceleration and suspension deformation, which suggests a higher tendency of the vehicle to instability and loss of control.

Tractor-semitrailers face the issue of off-tracking which restricts their movement through congested areas. One of the innovative and passive methods to reduce offtracking in tractor-semitrailers is to implement a Split fifth wheel coupling (SFWC). Studies show that off-tracking is reduced by up to 21% for a circular turning manoeuvre. The handling performance of the tractor-semitrailer with SFWC is not evaluated yet and hence needs to be ad-dressed. In the present work, in order to assess the handling performance of the vehicle with SFWC, simulations are carried out for ISO double lane change manoeuvre at various speeds. The results are compared with those of the Conventional fifth wheel coupling (CFWC) model to understand the relative performance of the tractor-semitrailer with SFWC. The results show that the performance of tractor-semitrailers with SFWC is on par with that of vehicles with CFWC at lower speeds; in fact, for speeds below 40 kmph, the lateral acceleration experienced by the semitrailer of SFWC vehicle is less compared to that of CFWC vehicle. However, it becomes a little unstable at higher speeds. With the development of stability control systems like Electronic stability control (ESC), optimized for tractor-semitrailers with SFWC, their performance would improve.
