Using mobile technology to increase safety awareness among dairy workers in the United States

Abstract: Our findings suggest the utilization of mobile learning techniques is an effective means to deliver safety awareness training content to dairy workers. Dairy worker safety training should be culturally, linguistically, and literacy appropriate and comprehensive in nature to include all applicable dairy safety hazards. Our observations support the use of mobile devices as just one component of a more comprehensive health and safety management program on farms.

“…For example, ride-share apps such as Uber offer GPS tracking that can be shared with family and friends in real time, as well as a distress alarm available on the app that can signal the ride-sharing service for help (69). Increased safety through technology can also be in the form of delivering safety information, such as the use of mobile technology for delivery of safety awareness in the workplace (70) and communicating emergency safety information through mobile text alerts (71). Safety in relation to technology and sexualized violence, however, has primarily been discussed negatively.…”

Texas DSHS expressed having a difficult time translating questionnaire and logging answers from the majority of Guatemalan workers ( 35 ).…”

“…Rodriguez et al evaluated the effectiveness of delivering health and safety training using mobile platforms to US dairy workers with limited English proficiency [67]. This method was successful, with workers enrolled (n = 1436) demonstrating a 18% mean increase from pre-to post-test knowledge of workplace safety practices (p < 0.05).…”
