Using Middle Ear Risk Index and ET Function as Parameters for Predicting the Outcome of Tympanoplasty

Abstract: Otitis media is an important and a highly prevalent disease of the middle ear and poses serious health problem world wide especially in developing countries where large percentage of the population lack specialized medical care. With a large number of patients frequently undergoing tympanoplasty for tubotympanic type of CSOM, it's important to assess the severity of the disease and predict the outcome of the surgical management whenever done. A normally functioning eustachian tube is an equally essential physi… Show more

“…In the present study, the most common age group affected with COM was 21-30 years (46%), followed by 31-40 (36%) and least in the age group of less than 20 years. This was similar to the studies of Kumar et al 5 According to Glasscock, though otitis media is a disease which occurs commonly in paediatric age group, the mean age at which the disease manifests is 20-29 years. Due to this reason, it is more commonly seen in young adults.…”

“…It may be classified COM squamous and COM mucosal. 5 COM when left untreated can lead to various morbidities and in certain cases may cause serious temporal and intracranial complications. 6 The MERI was presented by Becvarovski and Kartush and it generated as a numeric indicator of the severity of middle ear disease, to stratify the cases in different prognostic categories.…”

“…(3) Medical costs associated with tympanoplasty have recently compelled investigators to search for less expensive, simple non-surgical methods. (4) Without closure of perforation, morbidity may include chronic otorrhoea and cholesteatoma formation, deterioration of hearing. (5) The purposes of closing chronic dry perforations of the tympanic membrane are to improve hearing and prevent middle ear infections.…”
