Using maleic anhydride functionalized graphene oxide for improving the interfacial properties of carbon fiber/BMI composites

Abstract: Abstract. Maleic anhydride functionalized graphene oxide (MAH-GO) was synthesized and then introduced into carbon fiber (CF) reinforced bismaleimide (BMI) composites, with the aim of improving the interfacial adhesion strength between CF and BMI resin. Various characterization techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the maleic anhydride has been successfully grafted onto the GO surfaces. The s… Show more

“…From the spectra of GO, there was a broad peak located at 3413 cm −1 ; this originated from the stretching vibrations of ─OH. The peaks located at 1735, 1625, 1247, and 1024 cm −1 were assigned to the stretching vibrations of the CO of carboxyl groups; CC, C─OH and C─O of epoxy groups; and C─OH groups, respectively . From the spectra of RGO, the peak at 1024 cm −1 almost disappeared; this indicated the reduction of epoxy groups.…”

“…The high resolution C1s spectra of GO displays several oxygenated peaks such as C=O peak at 287.5 eV, O−C=O peak at 288.3 eV, C=C peak at 284.1 and C-O-C peak at 286.6 eV. The presence of oxygen moiety in the GO generates the scope of further functionalization to constitute functionalized GO and this contrives the impulse to covalently modify GO using POSS [44,45]. This could be substantiated from high resolution C1s spectra of POSS-GO.…”
