Using Low-Fidelity SimulationwithSophomore Nursing Studentsin aBACCALAUREATE NURSING PROGRAM

Abstract: Opportunities to achieve competency in the psychomotor and cognitive outcomes required of the nursing profession are limited due to shortages of clinical sites and situations. One solution is to use simulation to replicate some of the essential aspects of a clinical situation so it may be readily understood and managed when it occurs in reality. A program developed for sophomore students integrated the pharmacology, health assessment, and pathophysiology theory courses using low-fidelity simulation and compute… Show more

“…Faculty employing simulations can ensure that students have similar experiences, a feat impossible to do in the real community setting, and be confident that low-fidelity simulations can be a valuable teaching-learning approach (Sharpnack & Madigan, 2012). This is especially true in CHN, where faculty often have less control over situations and less direct supervision of student behaviors.…”

“…The results point to preferential implementation scenarios namely, college (10)(11)(13)(14)(15)(16)(18)(19)(20)22,25) and the clinical context (8,9,12,17,21,(23)(24)(25) , according to the purpose of the studies undertaken and the need to control or not the analyzed variables. The type of pedagogical strategy adopted is conditioned by the place where it is undertaken to the limitations and constraints imposed by these means.…”

“…Recently simulation has been used to address the need to develop clinical skills prior to clinical practice to ensure patient safety, enhance clinical confidence prior to clinical exposure and reduce pressure on over-worked clinical environments [5,9]. Despite this change in educational methodology, minimal documentation regarding the effectiveness of these educational methods exists, including the effect on the development of woman centred care skills in student midwives.…”
