Using Low-Cost Sensors for Measuring and Monitoring Particulate Matter with a Focus on Fine and Ultrafine Particles

Abstract: The paper deals with the measurement of individual size components of particulate matter focusing on typical particle size, mass, and number concentrations primarily in the city of Košice (Slovak republic) and the surrounding countryside. The deployment of the sensor IPS-7100 in the 2nd half of December 2022 allowed us to measure the particles smaller than the detection limit of other low-cost optical sensors—namely SPS30 and SEN54. The results show that although the mass concentration of ultrafine particles i… Show more

“…In reality, this occupation is concentrated in the unloading of materials and the loading of raw materials into the production area, three to four times a day for short periods of time. The same reasoning applies to PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and CO 2 in the office [8,19].…”

“…The chemical composition of the particles is determined by the emission process, which is caused by the different possibilities of chemical combinations [7]. These particles are PM 10 (i.e., particles up to 10 µm in aerodynamic equivalent diameter), coarse particles or PM 2.5-10 (particles between 2.5 and 10 µm in aerodynamic equivalent diameter), and PM 2.5 or fine particles (particles up to 2.5 µm in aerodynamic equivalent diameter) [8].…”

“…Finally, the correlation between PM10 concentration and the air temperature was negative. Others have reached the same conclusion [36,60,61,65,66]. However, the strength of the correlation varied across the city from −0.107 (TIM-235) to −0.635 (TIM-0C2).…”

“…While our list is not exhaustive, it aims to highlight citizens' interest in ambient air quality, a context with which the uRADMonitor ® network is fully aligned. Other initiatives and studies have also documented using low-cost sensors to monitor particulate matter finer than PM10 and PM2.5 [35,36].…”

“…Additionally, particles with aerodynamic diameters up to 2.5 µm are termed fine particle matter (PM 2.5 ). Ultrafine particles with a diameter below 1 micron are called PM 1.0 [1][2][3]. Both anthropogenic (man-made) and natural PM are known [2,3].…”
