Using Living Labs to Explore Needs and Solutions for Older Adults With Dementia: Scoping Review

Abstract: Background Numerous living labs have established a new approach for studying the health, independent living, and well-being of older adults with dementia. Living labs interact with a broad set of stakeholders, including students, academic institutions, private companies, health care organizations, and patient representative bodies and even with other living labs. Hence, it is crucial to identify the types of cocreations that should be attempted and how they can be facilitated through living labs. … Show more

“…In this paper, the focus is on health care testbeds in hospital and higher education contexts. In the previous literature, testbeds or living labs in health care have been used, for example, in developing dementia care [4], primary health care [5] and health promotion and rehabilitation [6]. Instead of only testing, new and existing services or products can also be co-created together with the company and the health care ecosystem [7].…”

“…The experiment results indicate that involving users, employing ICT for real context construction, and fostering collaboration contribute positively to innovation performance in the realm of services for the elderly. Additionally, in "Using Living Labs to Explore Needs and Solutions for Older Adults with Dementia: Scoping Review" (Verloo et al, 2021), the paper investigates the development of products and environments customized for older adults, addressing issues related to active aging and age-related health concerns. The findings underscore the importance of adopting a user-centered design approach, incorporating assistive technology, and focusing on the design of healthcare environments to enhance the well-being and quality of life for older adults with dementia.…”
