Using Legos and RoboLab (LabVIEW) with elementary school children

Abstract: This work-in-progress presentation describes the use of a Leg0 robotics kit and RoboLab software to meet the science, math, and technology standards of local elementary school curricula. The presentation includes a demonstration by a kindergartener. The instructional materials used include a standard Leg0 Mindstorms kit and the Robolab. Robolab is based on LabVIEW and retains the iconic programming interface. Assessment of student learning includes both formal, pre-and post multiple choice testing and demonstr… Show more

“…Realizamos uma análise acerca das ferramentas disponíveis para programação de robôs, RoboLab (ERIC WANG et al, 2001), Legal (PNCA,2010), com intuito de comparar as funcionalidades de ambos os softwares com o Roboeduc. O Robolab é um ambiente de programação que acompanha os kit's da linha LEGO Mindstorms.…”

“…First, most of the approaches aim to teach subjects closely related to the Robotics field (Petre and Price 2004; Klassner and Andreson 2003;Jansen et al 2004). Examples of these subjects are robot programming, robot construction, artificial intelligence, algorithm development, and mechatronics (Wang and Wang 2001;Weinberg et al 2001;Avanzato 2002;Jansen et al 2004;Ahlgren and Verner 2002). One of the notable exceptions to the previous cases, it is the early work of Papert (1980), who began with the idea of using robots, and mainly simulations, to teach subjects such as planar geometry.…”
