Using interpretative phenomenological analysis in autism research

Abstract: Qualitative studies within autism research are gaining prominence, yet there is little evidence about the usefulness of particular qualitative approaches in reflecting the perspectives and experiences of autistic participants. This short report serves to introduce interpretative phenomenological analysis as one among a range of qualitative approaches to autism research. We argue that certain features of interpretative phenomenological analysis, including its commitment to an equality of voice and researcher re… Show more

“…In the current study, interpretative phenomenological analysis was considered a useful methodological approach given its commitment to understanding the lived experience of participants (Smith et al 2009) and its increasing use in autism research (Howard et al 2019). IPA is characterised by a 'double hermeneutic' (Smith et al 2009) whereby both the researcher and the participant are seeking to interpret the experiences described.…”

“…In addition, while commonly used in other research paradigms, member checking was not employed due to recent criticisms of member checking as a benchmark for rigor (B. Smith & McGannon, 2018) and inherent conflict these methods have with phenomenological research (Howard et al, 2019). The rigor of the study was supported through the use of an interview guide that was initially developed for research with individuals with visual impairments (Haegele & Zhu, 2017) and then adapted to align with the purposes of this analysis.…”

“…Deconstructing normative assumptions and the imposition of non-autistic meanings requires entering into the mindset of the participant (Howard, Katsos, & Gibson, 2019), understanding their experiences and worldview (Milton & Bracher, 2013). Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyse the interview data.…”
